La Normandie Inconnue
The Victor Hugo family’s early photographic experimentation and literary record of the Channel Islands.
More details coming soon.
La Normandie Inconnue (Unknown Normandy) is a collaborative exhibition bringing together La Musée Victor Hugo – Maison Vacquerie (Villequier, Normandy), Hauteville House, the Victor Hugo Centre in Guernsey, Guernsey Heritage and Jersey Heritage.
The exhibition explores the deep and lingering connections between Normandy and the Channel Islands through the eyes of the Victor Hugo family. François‑Victor Hugo, Victor Hugo’s youngest son, was particularly captivated by the echoes of Norman heritage he discovered across the islands, in language, culture and laws, as well as in the landscapes and the people themselves.
This shared identity is celebrated through a rich selection of literary excerpts, poetry, early photography and other historical artefacts, revealing a lesser‑known narrative of place, belonging and artistic experimentation.
