Pip's dissertation project investigated how the decay of golden kelp is affected by varying environmental factors, and how small epiphytes living on its tissues affect its degradation rate. This talk will explore how the rate of kelp decay in the sea can dictate the fate of the carbon that it has stored, and what this may mean in the context of quantifying blue carbon. It will also highlight the importance of protecting our kelp forests, not just for biodiversity preservation, but also for economic resilience.
