Dating back 8,000 years old and having only been discovered in 1976 following an accidental fire, Les Fouaillages is a prehistoric burial mound located on L’Ancresse Common in the island’s north, and is considered one of the largest man-made monuments anywhere in Europe.

Because of the late discovery, a full modern excavation was possible of the untouched site, compared to other Guernsey sites that were years ago. This undercovered intriguing new evidence about ancestors of Guernsey.

Over 35,000 fascinating finds have been made at the site, some of which are currently on display at the Guernsey Museum in Candie Gardens.

L’Ancresse Common is home to a number of historic burial mounds, making it a must-see for lovers of history. To get there, head along Les Amarreurs Road towards the coast, and you will find signposts to guide you.
