Where to Find Great Vegetarian Food on the Islands of Guernsey

Get all of the details on the best places to find vegetarian treats on the Islands for your next visit.

It can often be difficult to find good options for differing diets when visiting smaller tourist destinations. However, over the past few years, there has been a huge increase in vegetarian options available across The Islands of Guernsey. There is never a need to assume that small local places cannot create something to your needs. To mark National Vegetarian Week this week, we've compiled a list of some of the best meat-free alternatives and plant-based choices, no matter what you are looking for.

Cobo Picnic

Best Place To Get... Doughnuts

THE STREAT is a relatively new kiosk in the Inner Market Buildings in the centre of St Peter Port. It offers a great range of on-the-go food from bagels to hot dogs, with a lot of vegan and vegetarian options, including a large variety of doughnuts.

Best Place To Get... PIZZA

Rosso is traditional pizza place on the St Peter Port Port seafront. They offer many vegetarian options including a daily pasta dish, and also now offer a full vegan pizza menu. which was a welcome addition for plant-based and dairy-free islanders and visitors last year. All of the pizzas are freshly made, cooked in the hand-made stone oven - the only one in Guernsey - using gas and wood at over 350 degrees. There is also a beautiful large wooden bar at Rosso, offering a variety of cocktails and an extensive wine list, featuring a handpicked selection of Californian & Italian wines.

Best Place to Get… Fish & Chips

Yep, you read that right. The Catch on the St Peter Port harbour front has a vegan fish alternative, meaning that everyone can now enjoy a seaside classic whilst visiting the islands. Great location too.

Best Place To Go … When You Don’t Know What You Want

Octopus Bar & Restaurant not only have one of the best locations on the island, but they also cater to everyone who walks through their doors. They state clearly, “If you’re vegan or vegetarian fear not, the chefs are willing to accommodate any dietary requirements. Choose three of your favourite ingredients and they will create a unique dish just for you!” If you are in a large group, then it may be a good idea to pre-warn the chefs.

Best Place To Get… Food On The Go

We already mentioned THE STREAT's offering earlier, but The Raw Store was a welcome change for hungry local workers at lunchtime when they opened on The Bordage, St Peter Port a few years ago. Their small, fresh, homemade menu changes daily, but always includes a hot plant-based dish - usually a curry or stew, a salad or a wrap option. The food is satisfying and delicious, full of the colours of the rainbow. You can eat in at one of their small tables, or you can takeaway and head somewhere with a view to enjoy your food. Don’t miss this one.

Best Place To Go For... A Good Selection

Copenhagen Bar & Grill evokes the beauty of natural oak, wooden and tiled floor with a contemporary feel and magnificent views over Castle Cornet from the top of the hill. The restaurant has a unique designed open kitchen and a whole section of the menu is dedicated to vegetarian and vegan options under a "From the Garden" section.

Best Place To Go... When At The Beach

Many people hear of Cobo Fish Bar over at Cobo Beach, but take a short stroll along the beach and you will find Mim’s Kiosk, where vegetarian beachgoers can enjoy loaded potato skins or topped fries as well as vegan sausage rolls and ice creams.

Best Place To Go For… Cakes

Cobo Tea Room is a favourite of islanders at any time of year. Overlooking the beautiful Cobo Bay on the West coast, they are a traditional family-run tearoom serving wholesome lunches, weekend breakfasts, homemade cake, freshly ground coffee and a range of quality teas in a 'proper' tea pot. As well as catering for gluten free and dairy free requirements, they have a great selection of vegan-friendly cakes too - and they taste fantastic.

Hotel Jerbourg is set in a prime spot on the cliff tops at Jerbourg Point, with breath-taking views towards Herm, Sark, Jersey and even France on a clear day. The Cliff Top Coffee Shop, bar and restaurant offer an outstanding selection of menus featuring local seafood combined with fresh Guernsey produce and home-made cakes.

Best Place To Go For… Afternoon Tea

If you think you can’t enjoy a Guernsey afternoon tea whilst on the Islands, think again. The OGH Brasserie can cater to any dietary requirement - just mention your needs when you book. Set in a spacious and sunny conservatory, overlooking the peaceful private gardens and St Peter Port harbour beyond, The Brasserie provides a lovely light and informal environment for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and indeed a traditional afternoon tea to suit everybody.
