Things To Do On The Islands of Guernsey This Christmas

Dare we say it, but the festive season is approaching! The Islands of Guernsey have plenty to offer over the winter months, especially in the lead up to Christmas when the days are short but the islands are covered in sparkling lights, restaurants are bustling and markets pop up all over.

We've rounded up the best that we have to offer around our islands. From shopping to concerts, there is something for all of the family.

Christmas Markets and Local Shopping

The Islands of Guernsey have an abundance of small businesses and there is no better time to get to explore all the wares on offer than the Christmas Markets in Guernsey and Alderney, the two larger islands. You’ll be treated to local produce, jams, ciders, sweet treats, handmade glassware, macrame, art and more. 

Here are some key dates to put in your diaries: 




Throughout November until 23rd December you will find the Guernsey Hamper Company’s Christmas Pop Up in the Guernsey Information Centre. Collecting together some of the Islands’ best small businesses for you, it is the perfect place to find gifts, Christmas decorations and amazing hampers of unique products. From beautiful glass tree decorations, chocolate and fudge from Sark, liquor and cider exclusively made in Guernsey, to seaweed chutneys, wooden ornaments and local beauty products - you’ll find it all here

If you are looking for a day trip, why not take the boat to Herm for their Christmas Island Shopping in November? With a reduced fare on your boat, local shops and a walk around the island, with lunch and treats available at the Mermaid, visiting Herm is a fun experience for all ages. These special Christmas Island days are taking place on 13th, 14th, 17th, 20th, 21st and 27th of November.

Events and Activities

Need some inspiration to stop you feeling Grinchy? There are great events happening to get you in the spirit. 

Guernsey & Herm Events:

  • Join in with Late Night Shopping every Thursday in December. Guernsey has a great mix of independent and big brand shops to explore. In St Peter Port, pay a visit to Guernsey exclusive stores like Indica, Evie & Me, Cadeaux, Maison Demain, Wanderlust, Gwyneth & Grey and Nautilus. 
  • Visit the Market Christmas Tree.
  • Attend the Christmas Light Switch On in the Market Place where Santa and his Elves will pay a visit. 
  • Try Ice Skating at the Friquet round their Christmas tree. 
  • The Folk & Costume Museum Christmas Shop, opening from Friday 12th November, offers a mix of Fascinating toys, bespoke items and mouth-watering delicacies shipped in from world-wide suppliers, make up a beautiful Christmas shop. There is nothing quite like the Museum Christmas Shop for atmosphere and intriguing gifts.
  • The Victorian Christmas Shop at 26 Cornet Street is open daily from Friday 19th November, an atmospheric shopping experience with a treasure trove of unusual gifts for all ages. Open for late night shopping on Thursdays in December. 
  • Head to the Mallard to watch new release ‘A Boy Called Christmas’.
  • Enjoy the Victorian Christmas at the Walled Garden at Saumarez Park on 4th December where the gardens and greenhouse will be transformed to a winter wonderland.
  • Make a Christmas Wreath with Guernsey Arts Workshops on 12th and 19th December.
  • Attend a Christmas Crafts Activity Day.
  • Head to Herm for Christmas Cocktails, Cheese and Charcuterie at the White House for early Christmas celebrations on 1st, 8th or 15th December.
  • Join in the Boxing Day Dip! Every 26th December locals gather on Cobo Bay and run into the sea together for charity.
  • Visit Victor Hugo's House which is open on certain days throughout November and December

Tuk Tuk Christmas Lights Tour

Book your ride on our motorised sleigh! Starting from the Albert Pier the 25 min route around St Peter Port includes Mill St, Market St, Le Pollet, Smith St & High Street. The 3 Tuk Tuks each carry 2 passengers. To get the best possible view of all the lights, the Tuk Tuks will have their roofs down (unless raining) so wrap up warm in your winter coat scarf and mittens! Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays from 28th November to 22nd December. 

Alderney Events:

  • Enjoy Late Night Shopping around Victoria Street. 
  • Get singing Carols around the island pub and restaurants
  • Attend the Christmas Tree Festival
  • Ride the Santa Express
  • Enjoy the Boxing Day Walk at the Alderney Wildlife Trust

Visit Father Christmas at the Grotto 

Pop along to Oaty and Joey's Playbarn to meet the man himself. Open every Saturday and Sunday in December leading up to Christmas, as well as Tuesday 21st, Wednesday 22nd, Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th.  Call 01481 241643 to book your tickets.

Concert at St James

Pantos and Performances 

The traditional Christmas past-time, live entertainment! Although a small island, Guernsey has an amazing theatre scene, with many different groups staging Christmas performances. 

This year’s GADOC pantomime is Mother Goose and shows are taking place from December 18th - January 1st at the Beau Sejour Theatre , it’s the perfect family event.  In early December you can see the Grammar School and Sixth Form’s performance of Nativity! The Musical, based on the hit movie and perfect for younger audiences.  For classic adventure join the Tin Whistle Production of Around the World in 80 Days at the Royal Performing Art Centre from Fridays to Sundays 10th-19th December. At the Performing Arts Centre you can also enjoy screenings and live broadcasts of performances. You can enjoy classic musical Anything Goes with an all star cast on Tuesday 7th December or take in The Royal Opera Houses’ performance of Tosca on Wednesday 15th December. For traditional Christmas magic, be sure to book tickets to the Royal Ballet’s Live Broadcast of The Nutcracker on Thursday 9th December. 

December is also a great month for new cinema releases, with a range to suit everyone’s taste including: new Disney film Encanto, Spielberg’s West Side Story, new Marvel film SpiderMan: No Way Home, and action packed The King’s Man. You can find all the details on the Mallard Cinema website. 

Musical Events

There’s nothing better than music to celebrate the Christmas season, and you will find fun and beautiful musical events taking place across the islands during December. 

At St James Concert Hall in Guernsey you will find traditional carols, orchestral music and brass as well as a Vintage Dance Night. 

In Alderney, join the Carol Singing event at St Anne’s Church with mince pies and mulled wine on Friday 16th December for a perfect traditional Christmas evening. 

Festive Menus 

Guernsey is home to a plethora of amazing restaurants who offer special festive menus. Here are just a few of the menus on offer this season:

Christmas Breaks in Herm and Sark 

If you want a true island-Christmas experience, consider staying on one of the beautiful Islands of Guernsey over the holidays. The Islands of Herm and Sark are offering full packages at their best hotels, full of activities and amazing meals. 

Winter Wonderland Weekends at the White House on Herm are available during December weekends with great children's activities, carol singing, craft activities, movies and inclusive three course meals and breakfasts.  Alternatively, if you are looking for a one night escape, you can visit Herm for a trip for a B&B break on 23rd, 27th, 29th December. For Christmas Weekend, you can spend 24th-27th December in Herm with their 3 night Christmas package. All meals are included, with activities for children and adults, a visit from Santa, movies, carol services and the treat of having the beautiful island of Herm to explore.

Local tips

  • Make sure you book your activities and dining in advance as Christmas is a busy time for the Islands of Guernsey. Booking ahead of time will help you have a more relaxed and fun holiday experience. 
  • For transport options, taxis can get quite busy at Christmas so try to book in advance where possible, or check the Night Bus timetable.  There is also a local service called Home James that returns you and your car to your residence after an evening out.
