23 - 25 June
The Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society is preparing its 2023 celebratory weekend featuring Victor Hugo’s many ventures as a campaigner.
Famous for the books he wrote during his 15 year residence in Guernsey, Les Miserables, Toilers of the Sea, L’Homme qui rit, Legend of the Ages, Théâtré en liberté and many others; he is also notable for the wide range of causes taken-up Hugo throughout his lifetime.
Capital punishment was a particular challenge while he was in the Channel Islands because of a Guernsey hanging, but other campaigns included; Human Rights, Education for all, the prevention of Poverty, Notre Dame Cathedral restoration, Social Justice, United States of Europe, Copyright, Republicism, Anti-Slavery to name just a few!
Seminar speakers are now being engaged and will include: Bradley Stephens, Agathe Giraud, Florence Naugrette, Myriam Roman and Jean-Marc Hovasse.
The weekend will commence with Island and St. Peter Port tours by specialist Hugo tour guides who will show the many island features incorporated in Hugo’s books.
More details will be available nearer the time on the Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society's website.
