During October, the spookiest month of the year, you can experience a darker side to Guernsey's history on a variety of tours and guided walks around the island.
As the nights start getting darker, Guernsey starts to show a different side of its personality. The leaves on the trees start turning orange and golden, and pumpkins line the ’hedge veg’ stalls around the Island. Autumn has well and truly begun.
Halloween is believed to be the most haunted night of the year. What started as a British Celtic celebration many centuries ago has become Americanised in recent years, but October 31st is still acknowledged in Guernsey. You will see costumed revellers taking part in Trick or Treating on the night, as well as many fancy dress costume parties to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve.
Local Gold Accredited tour guide Annette Henry is well known for her ghost walks around St Peter Port and coach tours around the island. Complete with lamplight and black cloak, Annette's guided tours around St Peter Port focus on the ghost sightings and stories of the famous witch trials and the resulting burnings at the stake that happened on the island four centuries ago. If you prefer a coach tour you can expect night time visits to graveyards, walks through quiet country lanes under moonlight, and visits to privately owned bunkers; not usually open to the public. You can find out information on Annette's tour on her website.
