2017 Channel Islands Heritage Festival
Island Wide8 Apr 2017 - 10 May 2017
The third Channel Islands Heritage Festival is taking place between 8th April - 10th May 2017.
The Channel Islands Heritage Festival is a celebration of a group of small islands with a big history.
The Islands' astonishing tides, rich landscapes and colourful histories have drawn people to their shores for centuries. The 2017 festival will focus on the Islands' heroes, myths and legends.
From the first Neolithic settlers to Norse raiders and Romans, these small yet surprinsingly diverse Islands have had more than their fair share of adventure and adversity.
Visit our shores to uncover a wealth of stories, from tales of early seafarers to heroic accounts from the German Occupation during World War II. Explore our coastlines for yourself, discover our countryside on foot, by bicycle or join a tour, visit our museums and heritage sites and experience all the drama of the Channel Islands with our programme of festival events!
Learn about Guernsey’s naval hero of Napoleonic times, Admiral James de Saumarez or take a kayak tour to learn about The First Commando – Hubert Nicolle who landed by canoe during the occupation on a dangerous three day fact finding mission. Hear about Guernseyman Isaac Brock “Hero of Upper Canada” and learn about the one portrait that was made during his lifetime. Or why not venture to Sark to discover the legend of St Magloire where it is said he slayed a dragon.
And as a festival exclusive, explore the Creux Mahie Cave – a privately owned cave that has been granted special access for accompanied coasteering and walking tours. Believed to be the largest cave in the Channel Islands, measuring over 200 feet in length and its height varying from only 5 feet up to 50 feet, it is the subject of much folklore. It has been said no one has ever been to the end of this mysterious cavern…
