Out and About
Guernsey’s environment will reinvigorate your senses: savour the scent of cool, wooded valleys, or the sight of a sunset, mirrored in the Atlantic Ocean. Soak up the sound of waves lapping on old granite landing steps, or the tingle of salt on your skin after a long day on the beach.
Our contrasting coastline is the setting for flat sandy beaches and dunes, secret coves and rock pools, rugged harbours and cliff walks on the beautiful south coast. Inland, Guernsey has a country heart that beats to the rhythm of the seasons. Sleepy lanes, private gardens, nature reserves and migrating birds are just some of the natural treasures waiting to be discovered and, with our milder winters, the island is in bloom all year round.
Guernsey has a 426 hectares RAMSAR site on its west coast encompassing Lihou Island, nature reserves as well as an inter-tidal area and outlying reefs and rocks. This is an international initiative to protect important wetland habitats.
Of course, it isn’t only Guernsey in the Bailiwick, there are the other islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm, all of which have a different feel and charm. As the sea is in our blood, popping over to the other islands by ferry or private boat is a favourite pastime for locals and couldn’t be easier. Activities in and on the water are also very popular.
Guernsey offers walkers numerous opportunities to explore. Getting out and about on foot is arguably the best way to get a real feel for the island and will allow you to discover much of what makes us so special.
Accredited guides are available for guided walks on most aspects of Island life and in Spring and Autumn there are Walking Festivals. Walks are also offered by the RSPB and other groups.
There are many ways to enjoy our environment. Details can be found in the Activities section of this website and further information and literature is available from the Guernsey Information Centre. This includes A Must Have Map, A Walking Map, A St Peter Port Map which are free to pick up when you are on the Island. Guernsey Coastal Walks and Nature Trails and the Channel Islands Way are also available to buy.
