In 1855, Guernsey welcomed into exile on its shores Victor Hugo - one of the most celebrated and best-known literary and political figures of the time, and still renowned for his stories today. During his fifteen years of residency, Guernsey in particular [but also Sark] provided the inspiration for many of his works including the iconic Les Misérables. Infact The Toilers of the Sea is set in Guernsey and he even dedicated it to "the rock of hospitality and freedom... the island of Guernsey, severe yet gentle, my present refuge, my probable tomb".
