The 13th century castle contains various gardens that have been created through the ages. The 16th century Sutler’s Garden was a vital source of herbs for medicinal and kitchen use with a pleasure garden to add beauty. Sir John Lambert gave his name to the 17th century Lambert Garden where peony, southern wood and the Guernsey lily form a Tudor Rose. The Governor’s Garden dates from the 18th century and is an elegant tapestry of lavender and purple sage, while the Master Gunner’s Garden would once have been used to grow food and house animals. Castle tours available May - September.
